Understanding Facebook Business Manager

Facebook Business Manager is a free tool from Meta that acts as a central hub for managing all of your organization's Facebook and Instagram assets. While it provides a secure and organized way to manage your assets, it can sometimes be a source of confusion for new users.

What is Business Manager?

Think of Business Manager as a master dashboard for your organization's digital presence on Facebook and Instagram. Instead of giving everyone direct access to your Page, Business Manager allows you to:

  • Centralize Assets: Manage all of your Facebook Pages, Instagram accounts, ad accounts, and product catalogs from one place.
  • Secure Access: Grant different levels of access to team members without making them a full Admin on every Page. This protects your assets in case an employee leaves the organization or loses access to their personal account.
  • Manage Permissions: Assign people to specific Pages, Ad Accounts, or other assets and control their permissions (e.g., giving one person access to a Page and another person access to an Ad Account).

Key takeaway: Business Manager is the recommended way for an organization to manage its Facebook assets. When you are added to a Page within a Business Manager account, your permissions are managed through that system, not directly on the Page itself.

How Business Manager Relates to Page Management

When an organization uses Business Manager, your personal Facebook account's access to a Page is tied to your role within the Business Manager. This is a common point of confusion.

Here's how it works:

  1. An Admin of the Business Manager account adds your personal profile to the system.
  2. They then assign you specific assets, such as a Facebook Page.
  3. They grant you a role for that specific asset (e.g., "Page Admin," "Editor," or "Financial Analyst").

Even if you are not listed directly on the Page's "Page Roles" list, you have access because your permission is granted through the Business Manager account.

Troubleshooting Issues Related to Business Manager

If your organization uses Business Manager and you are experiencing issues connecting your accounts, these are the most common problems and their solutions.

Issue: "My Facebook Page is not showing up in the connection list."

  • You Don't Have the Right Business Manager Role: You need to be added to the Business Manager account first. The person who manages your Business Manager needs to invite you to the account.
  • You Haven't Been Assigned to the Page: After being added to the Business Manager, you must also be assigned to the specific Facebook Page. The Business Manager Admin must go to Business Settings > Pages, find the Page, click Add People, and assign you a role (you need to be an Admin to connect to our platform).

Issue: "I keep getting a 'Permissions Error' when trying to connect my Instagram account."

  • Instagram Account is Not in Business Manager: Both the Facebook Page and the Instagram account must be assigned to the same Business Manager account. If they are in different accounts, they cannot be linked and you won't be able to connect them.

Issue: "I have access to the Page, but I can't publish content."

  • Incorrect Permission Level: You may have a role like "Advertiser" or "Analyst" in the Business Manager, which gives you view-only access or limited functionality. To publish content via our platform, you must have at least an Editor or Admin role for the Page within the Business Manager.
