How to Turn Off Comments on Facebook and Instagram

As an organization, you may occasionally want to disable comments on specific posts to manage conversations, prevent spam, or maintain a positive environment. While our platform does not have direct control over this setting, you can easily turn off comments directly on Facebook and Instagram.



Disabling Comments on Facebook Pages

You can control comments on a post-by-post basis. Facebook does not offer a global setting to turn off comments for your entire Page's content.

To Turn Off Comments on a Specific Post:

  1. Navigate to the post on your organization's Facebook Page.
  2. Click the three-dot menu (...) in the top-right corner of the post.
  3. From the dropdown menu, select Who can comment on this post?
  4. A new window will appear. You can choose from the following options:
    • Public: Anyone can comment.
    • Profiles and Pages you mention: Only the Pages and profiles you tag can comment.
    • Profiles and Pages that follow the Page: Only people and Pages who follow you can comment.
  5. There is not an option to completely turn off comments, but the most restrictive setting is limiting it to profiles and Pages you mention.

Important Note on Visitor Posts: If you want to prevent visitors from creating their own posts on your Page's timeline, you can manage this in your Page settings. This is different from disabling comments on your own posts.

  • To do this, go to your Page's Settings > Privacy > Public Posts and select "Disable" for the option that allows visitors to post.

Disabling Comments on Instagram Posts

Instagram offers a simple way to turn off comments either before or after you've published a post.

To Turn Off Comments on a Post Before Publishing:

  1. In the Instagram app, go through the process of creating a new post.
  2. After you've added filters or edits and are on the "New Post" screen, tap Advanced Settings at the bottom.
  3. Under the "Comments" section, tap the toggle to Turn off commenting.
  4. Tap the back arrow and then share your post.

To Turn Off Comments on a Post You've Already Published:

  1. Open the Instagram app and navigate to your post.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu (...) in the top-right corner of the post.
  3. From the menu, select Turn Off Commenting.
  4. To turn them back on, simply follow the same steps and tap Turn On Commenting.
