Control Your Conversation: A Guide to Hiding and Managing Comments on Facebook
Facebook provides a robust set of tools to control who can comment on your posts and what content is visible, helping you maintain a positive and safe online space. Whether you want to turn off comments on a single post or proactively filter out unwanted content across your profile or Page, this guide will walk you through the process. (To turn off Commenting completely, see our solution hiding comments containing common words at the bottom).
Turning Off Comments for a Specific Post
For complete control over the conversation on a particular post, you can decide who is allowed to comment.
- Navigate to the post you want to manage.
- Click the three dots (•••) located in the top-right corner of the post.
Select "Who can comment on your post?" from the dropdown menu.
You will be presented with a list of options. To effectively turn off comments from the public or strangers, you can choose:
- Friends: Only your Facebook friends can comment.
Profiles and Pages you mention: Only people or Pages you've specifically tagged can comment.
Note: Unlike some other platforms, Facebook does not currently offer a one-click "Turn Off All Comments" option for personal profiles. Selecting the most restrictive audience is the primary method of control.
Proactively Filtering Comments on Your Profile
You can use Facebook's built-in filters to automatically hide unwanted comments from all your public posts. This is the most effective way to prevent most undesirable comments across your profile.
1. Enable the Profanity Filter
This tool uses Facebook's own list of offensive words and phrases to automatically hide comments.
- Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner of Facebook and select "Settings & Privacy," then click "Settings."
- In the left-hand menu, click on "Followers and public content."
- Locate the "Profanity Filter" option.
- Click the "Edit" button next to it and ensure it is turned ON.
2. Hide Comments with Custom Keywords (Moderation Assist)
For more personalized control, you can use a feature called Moderation Assist to automatically hide comments containing specific words, phrases, or links.
- Follow the steps above to navigate to "Followers and public content."
- Find the section for "Moderation Assist."
- Click "Add" or "Edit" under the "Criteria" section.
- You can add criteria such as "Keywords in comment." Here, you can manually enter up to 1,000 words, phrases, and emojis to automatically hide.
Advanced Comment Moderation for Facebook Pages | Essentially Hiding ALL Comments
If you manage a Facebook Page, you have access to more powerful, bulk-moderation tools.
Hide comments containing certain words from your Page:
This feature allows you to create and upload a custom list of keywords, phrases, and emojis that you want to automatically hide from your Page's posts. Any comment containing a term from this list will be hidden from everyone except the commenter and their friends.
- From your Page, go to "Settings & Privacy" > "Settings".
- In the "Moderation" section, find the option "Hide comments containing certain words from your Page".
- You can manually add keywords or upload a list from a .CSV file. To upload a file, click the "Upload from .csv" link and select your file. (See images below).
- Click "Save."
