How to Boost a Post on Instagram
Overview
Boosting a post on Instagram turns an existing post, Reel, or Story into a paid ad that reaches people beyond your followers. Boosted posts can appear in the Explore tab, Home Feed, profile feed, and Stories.
Boosting is handled by Meta (Instagram's parent company) — it is not a feature within Social Cascade. Social Cascade helps you create, schedule, and publish posts. Boosting is a separate paid advertising action you take directly through Instagram or Meta Business Suite after a post is published.
Before You Start
- You need an Instagram Professional account (Business or Creator). Personal accounts cannot boost. To switch: go to Settings > Account > Switch to Professional Account.
- Your Instagram Professional account must be connected to a personal Facebook account via Meta Accounts Center. You will be prompted to set this up when you first try to boost. Only one Instagram account can be connected per Facebook account for boosting purposes. See Boost with Accounts Center for details.
- A valid payment method on file with Meta.
- Music restriction: Posts and Reels that use copyrighted music from the Instagram music library cannot be boosted. Only original audio or royalty-free music from Meta's Sound Collection is eligible. Check your post's audio before attempting to boost.
- Apple service fee: If you boost through the Instagram iOS app, Apple applies a 30% service fee on top of your ad spend. To avoid this, boost from instagram.com on desktop instead.
- For more details, see Boost a post on Instagram on the Instagram Help Center.
How to Boost a Post on Instagram
- Go to your Instagram profile.
- Tap the post, Reel, or Story you want to boost.
- Tap Boost (appears below the image for feed posts and Reels, at the bottom for Stories).
- If this is your first time boosting, you may be prompted to connect your Instagram account to Meta Accounts Center. Follow the on-screen prompts to link your personal Facebook account.
- Select a goal — choose what you want people to do: more profile visits, more website visits, or more messages.
- Define your audience — choose Automatic (Meta finds people similar to your followers), Local (people in a specific geographic area), or Create Your Own (set age, gender, location, and interests manually).
- Set your daily budget and duration. Meta recommends at least $5 per day for 6 days for effective results. You can also choose to run the boost until you pause it manually.
- Add a call-to-action button that matches your goal (e.g., Visit Profile, Learn More, Send Message).
- Tap Preview ad to review how your boost will appear across different placements (Feed, Explore, Stories).
- Tap Boost post to submit for review.
- Wait for Meta's ad review — usually completed within 24 hours. You will receive a notification when your boost is approved, rejected, or ends.
Alternate path: You can also boost from Meta Business Suite (Content section) or from instagram.com on desktop (select the post, click Boost). Boosting on desktop avoids the Apple iOS service fee.
Reels-specific notes: Reels eligible for boosting must use original audio or royalty-free sounds (not copyrighted music), be 15 minutes or less, and not contain product tags or camera/face effects.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Boost button not visible | Account is a personal account, not Professional. | Switch to a Business or Creator account in Settings > Account > Switch to Professional Account. |
| "Can't boost this post" | Post uses copyrighted music, unsupported interactive elements (polls, certain stickers), or violates Meta's ad policies. | Choose a different post, or re-upload with original audio. See Boost a post on Instagram for full eligibility details. |
| "You need to set up Accounts Center" | Instagram Professional account is not linked to a personal Facebook account. | Follow the Accounts Center setup prompts when tapping Boost, or set it up in Settings > Accounts Center. |
| Boost rejected | Content violates Meta Advertising Standards. | Edit the post to comply, or request a manual review in the Account Quality dashboard. See About ads in review. |
| Apple service fee applied | You boosted through the Instagram iOS app. | Next time, boost from instagram.com on desktop or Meta Business Suite to avoid the 30% Apple fee. |
